Tests

IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

The IELTS test is co-owned and was co-created by a global partnership of education and language experts:  IDP: IELTS Australia, the British Council and Cambridge English Language Assessment. These organisations are dedicated to academic excellence, cultural understanding, student placement and enabling success worldwide.

IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training

IELTS is available in: Academic – for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

The IELTS test consists of four components: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. You will always take the Listening, Reading and Writing parts all on the same day one after the other, with no breaks between them. Your Speaking test is usually scheduled on the afternoon of the test day; however, it can be scheduled within seven days before or after that. You will be contacted by your local IELTS test centre to inform you of the date and location of your speaking test.

For a full description of the IELTS test components, please ensure you also read the IELTS Information for Candidates booklet.
